Homework help problems

How has the homework help been going for all of you? I have a couple of libraries htat are having problems with people not being able to connect from home. They are able to connect from the library using their Kansas Library Card, but not when they try it at home. They go to the KLC site, enter their information, and then click on the homework help link. At the library they go right in, but at home they get another rerquest for a library card number. The number on their KLC doesn't work at this point. Since I don't have a windows machine away from th elibrary, I have been hampered in trying to run this dowm. Has anyone else run into this, and perhaps solved it?

Hi Steve,

We think this has been a problem related to the use of a referring URL between KUMC and Tutor. As of early this week, we've switched the authentication over to EZProxy. When we did this for the KSLC databases, this type of problem dropped off dramatically, so we are hoping for good results with HWK as well. Any feedback about the number of problems you hear of now that we've made the switch will help us determine if we've been successful. Perhaps the libraries that have reported the probelm could check back with those patrons for an update?

Thanks!
Jeff

Steve,
We had this happen in SW to a few patrons and the people at Tutor.com said to check if they had Norton or McAfee with a built-in firewall. The patrons did and when they disabled the firewall they were able to get in. We were not comfortable with this solution so I hope they get this worked out.

McAfee is always problematic, especially in conjunction with the windows firewall. I usually go with one or the other, but not both.

I agree that it's a problem and needs to be addressed... or we need to know what ports or programs to allow through McAfee.
